"Marshall McLuhan’s prophecy that “the successor to politics will be propaganda” has happened. Raw propaganda is now the rule in Western democracies, especially the US and Britain.

On matters of war and peace, ministerial deceit is reported as news. Inconvenient facts are censored, demons are nurtured. The model is corporate spin, the currency of the age. In 1964, McLuhan famously declared, “The medium is the message.” The lie is the message now.

But is this new? It is more than a century since Edward Bernays, the father of spin, invented “public relations” as a cover for war propaganda. What is new is the virtual elimination of dissent in the mainstream."

Almost 30 years apart, John Pilger’s two documentaries about Palestine carried the same title, "Palestine is Still the Issue". His point was that, in the course of a generation, a great injustice remained unchanged and urgent.

John Pilger describes reporting (to mark the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima) from five ‘ground zeros’ for nuclear weapons – from Hiroshima to Bikini, Nevada to Polynesia and Australia.

Nuclear war is not only imaginable but planned. The greatest build-up of NATO military forces since the Second World War is under way on the western borders of Russia. On the other side of the world, the rise of China is viewed in Washington as a threat to American dominance.

Thanks, Biljana! Watching 'news', these days, is watching devil in the face. Will the immense majority of decent people in the world keep getting distracted, drugged, fooled? It seems to me that hope hangs on two phenomena. The first is the blessed inertia of the millions of people who every day work, cook, clean, feed each other, care for each other, suffer, love, heal, build, repair, try and learn, and fail, and try again and prod along as well as they can. As such we, collectively, are a force that even devil must fear. And the second are the glimmers of clarity and awe that come when one shares, as you do, a sense of life that is more than prodding along. Reading your words makes me think that we exist to understand all the energies that move us, within and outside ourselves, and of practicing honesty and solidarity, and of developing as much as we can the 'humane' in our multi-faceted humanity. My enormous gratitude for taking the time to write them.
